A Mid Modern Bathroom Renovation

with a little flamingo-chic style

I said I wouldn’t do the ORC again in the Fall — and yet here we are! It’s the 2022 Fall One Room Challenge, and I’m jumping in with both feet! What’s the One Room Challenge? In 2011 Linda Weinstein of calling it home set out with the goal of finishing ONE ROOM in her home. She gathered a group of friends with the same goal, and thus the One Room Challenge was born. The One Room Challenge happens twice per year — Spring and Fall — and participants usually have six weeks to transform one room.

During this round, the One Room Challenge runs for eight weeks (September 28 - November 16). Each Wednesday I’ll be posting the latest update on our bathroom including plans for projects you can try at home and my favorite shopping sources. In the end, I will post a budget, too, so you will know exactly what we spent and how we used our resources. Since we love DIY, there are a bunch of projects to show you along the way!

Our project: A Studio/Guest Bath

Flamingo Fun & Functionality

There are millions of homes with this kind of bathroom: not luxurious or palatial, but functional. Right now both of ours are ugly, too, having been badly renovated by prior homeowners. So many of the featured projects on Instagram and Pinterest are aspirational — projects which require such a large budget and square footage that they can be discouraging. We will create a beautiful, functional bathroom that feel luxurious with a nod to the home’s origins while also being within reach.

A few months ago we had a plumbing disaster which means the bathroom has been gutted. We have addressed the emergency situations. Now we can work on the cosmetic and functional aspects of the project. So, we are here: a Mid Century bathroom — currently perhaps the ugliest bathroom on the planet -- with massive water damage needing to be renovated. Our vision: a clean and fresh bathroom with a nod to its MCM roots. Beautiful tile, DIY cabinetry (my husband's passion project), and stunning fixtures.

This bath is a multi-purpose room. It houses the sink/bath for my art studio and for the laundry area, but it is also the guest bathroom. So, I’ll be using beautiful tile on the floor and walls, handmade cabinetry, but an unusual touch: a deep kitchen sink in the vanity. This will be a place for washing paint brushes and soaking delicates as well as for guests to brush their teeth. This bathroom will keep (assuming I can restore it) the vintage celedon tub.
