DIY Workroom Makeover

A Creative Space Transformation in six weeks

Here we go again! It’s the 2019 Fall One Room Challenge! What’s the One Room Challenge? In 2011 Linda Weinstein of calling it home set out with the goal of finishing ONE ROOM in her home. She gathered a group of friends with the same goal, and thus the One Room Challenge was born. The One Room Challenge happens twice per year — in April and October — and participants have six weeks to transform one room.

This time around I am taking on the most personal room in our home: my Workroom. I spend most of my day here: writing, editing, and reading. But this is also where I sew and paint, journal and collage, and make and make and make. My Workroom is home office, art studio, craft room, sewing room, and library all in one 11’ x 14’ room. And given the hours I spend working here, it needs to be pleasant, cheerful, and bright.

The One Room Challenge runs for six weeks (October 3 - November 6). Each Thursday I’ll be posting the latest update on my Workroom including plans for projects you can try at home and my favorite shopping sources. In the end, I will post a budget, too, so you will know exactly what we spent and how we used our resources. Since we love DIY, there are a bunch of projects to show you along the way!

Workroom Makeover Schedule

Week One | Oct 3 | The Workroom Before

I am tackling a multipurpose room: my Workroom. This is where I write and edit, journal and paint, sew and wrap and read and so much more. This room must be beautiful, functional, and inspirational. I’ll show you my inspiration board, the furniture I started with, and the guiding principles I’m using as the room evolves.

Week Two | Oct 10 |
I have this thing with Green

I spend a lot of time in my Workroom, so this room needs to be comfortable and beautiful, organized, and clutter-free. I’ll show you the colors and patterns I have chosen to make my Workroom into a creative oasis of just-right.

Week Three | Oct 16 | Furniture Week

We are repurposing some old furniture, making a few new pieces, and scouring the Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist for the rest. Come see everything I’ve found — and how I’m making old things new again.

Week Four | Oct 23 | Storage & Organization

It’s the bane of every sewing room and craft room on the planet: storage and organization. First, we will talk about how to KonMari a creative space (yes, you can!). Then we will tackle organization and storage of all those things that spark joy — with organization that sparks joy, too.

Week Five | Oct 30 | Lighting & Windows

Winter is coming, and my Workroom windows are at ground level, so I need to add layers of light as well as window treatments that take advantage of the natural sunlight.

Week six | Nov 6 |
Before & After

The Big Reveal! I’ll show you the entire room finished and ready for creative work to begin again. I’ll show you the room’s floor plan and the multiple work zones. We will also talk budget — how much did we spend and where did the money go?
