FAQ Tanzite StoneDecks
Using Tanzite to Build a DIY Deck
When we were thinking about our new deck and what materials to use, we considered all of the options: wood, composite, PVC as well as concrete and paver patios. But we ended up choosing Tanzite Stone Decks system — a product I discovered when doing research about deck materials that hold up well in the elements. We live in Colorado where we have heat and cold as well as higher UV exposure. So we were looking for a solution that would stand the test of time. When I found Tanzite, I knew it was the right solution for our project.
Tanzite is a Canadian company, and their product is built for winters. That’s a huge advantage since we have winter weather that can be wildly unpredictable at times. Their Stone Deck system is a manufactured stone product that feels a bit like tile underfoot. However, it is installed much like a traditional decking product.
Note: Tanzite provided materials for our deck project. The opinions here are my own.
I have gotten a LOT of questions about Tanzite and our DIY experience, so here is an FAQ for anyone considering using Tanzite for your own deck:
Is Tanzite really a DIY product?
Yes. But I say that with some caveats. It is more like laying tile than putting down a wooden deck. And the surface needs to be quite level because the planks don’t have any give to them — unlike a wood board. So I would say that it is a DIY project — depending on your DIY skills. If you have laid tile, it’s very similar. And if you are unfamiliar with framing, you need some good guidance on how to frame your deck.
BUT if you are resurfacing an older deck: Tanzite would be very easy. It can be installed over an existing framing — if the joist spacing is right. So you could resurface an older deck with Tanzite and have a whole new deck in just days.
What was the hardest part of the project?
Getting the framing level. That was partly, however, because it was a DIY project. It took us longer to do the framing than a big crew would have taken. And our materials warped and twisted a bit in the intervening time. Had the framing been knocked out in a few days, that wouldn’t have been an issue. But we are just a family of three people. It took longer.
How long did it take to complete the deck?
About six weeks total of work time — but only one week of that was full-time. The rest was nights and weekends.
What are the benefits of using Tanzite for outdoor decks?
The biggest benefit is simply the lack of required maintenance. You’ll never have to sand it, stain it, or replace warped boards. It is almost completely maintenance-free, and it has an incredibly long life. So it should last for decades.
What Tanzite did you use?
We chose the White Ash finish in the Appalachian Collection. This is the installation that is most like traditional decking. The planks are installed with a slight gap between which allows for good drainage. We love how it turned out.
What tools did you need?
The two most important tools were a wet tile saw for cutting the Tanzite and a level! Of course we used other tools including a circular saw, a nail gun, and a palm nailer for the framing. But that wet tile saw was critical for getting the angled cuts right.
Do you have any DIY Tips for installing a Tanzite Stone Deck?
Take your time. Learn how to use the system. And use the right tools: a drill, a mallet, and a tile saw. Once you have done a section, you’ll have the feel for it, and it will be faster! Just take your time.
How has the deck held up since it was installed? Have you noticed any wear or issues?
The deck is gorgeous, and we haven't noticed any wear or other issues. There are a few places where we might go back and try to cut a better piece – some of those funky angles that were tricky to get right. But those are our installation defects from learning on the job.
Would you recommend Tanzite to others?
Absolutely! When I was looking for a decking product, I wanted something that would hold up to the elements. We have extremes of temperature – both highs and lows – here in Colorado as well as intense UV exposure. I wanted a surface that would be comfortable under foot, would last for a long time, and would be easy to clean. Tanzite ticked all of the boxes – and is even better than I expected.
Choosing the right stone for your outdoor deck can be a tricky job. We are very happy with our Tanzite decking!
Do you have any tips or advice for someone planning to build their own deck with Tanzite Stonedecks?
Invest both your time and your money in the framing. The framing will ensure that your deck lasts for decades. Use the correct joist spacing. And spend the time it takes getting everything level. Be fastidious – it will pay off in the end!
